The 31-day Filibuster

ree

While I try to keep my political standings out of my writing, being an American citizen having pensively watched and waited to see when the government would re-open has been a different level of anxiety.

Currently without a corporate job and a recipient of SNAPs myself, I have found this entire show uncanny and worrying. Watching the vote fail by four or more votes each day has been a different type of heartbreak that I didn't realize could exist, while they continue to vote other bills into practice.

Watching them sit or stand comfortably and carouse around to the table of their vote either "aye" or no in air conditioning as if there aren't American people begging for them to hurry and decide so that they don't lose their homes, apartments, transportation and other means of living.

I once thought I had thick skin, but find that now - my skin is fairly thin compared to lawmakers. Especially since their means of living hasn't been affected since they are still getting paid to be long winded. Which is essentially what a filibuster is in layman's terms.

A filibuster is designed to prolong debate and delay or prevent a vote on a bill, resolution, amendment or other debatable question. As someone who loves to avoid things, I totally get it - but I feel like this isn't the time to avoid something since it deals with human lives.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to have a lengthy opinion on it, but I can say that it's disheartening as an American.
